Police have detained a suspect in the shooting deaths of South African musician AKA and his friend Tibz at a restaurant in Johannesburg last month. The suspect—whose identity has not been made public—was allegedly recognized by the victims when they were eating dinner at Wish restaurant because he had used his brand-new Standard Bank card there.

According to a police source, the suspect received the card from an unnamed person who told him to use it at the restaurant before discarding it. The card was linked to a bank account that the day after the murders, allegedly as payment for his involvement in the crime, got a deposit of R133 000.

The police connected the card to the suspect, who was arrested on Tuesday at his home in Soweto. The police also seized a gun and ammunition, which are currently being investigated for any possible link to the murders.

While the cause of the killings is yet unknown, the authorities are investigating the possibility that it was related to the ongoing dispute between AKA and Cassper Nyovest, two rappers with similar styles and varying degrees of notoriety. Cassper recently responded to the release of a diss track by AKA, actual name Kiernan Forbes, with a song of his own.

The South African music business and fans were devastated by the deaths of AKA and Tibz, who was also a manager and producer of music. They rushed to social media to express their sorrow and call for justice. Days passed while politicians and celebrities paid their respects to the deceased musicians using the hashtag #JusticeForAKA.

The family of AKA issued a statement expressing gratitude to the public for their support and requesting privacy during their time of grief. Additionally, they made a plea for anyone with knowledge about the killings to come forward and assist the authorities.

It is anticipated that the accused will soon appear in court to answer to allegations of attempted murder, murder, and unlawful possession of a handgun and ammunition. Further potential accomplices in the crime are still being sought after by the police.
