Free State University (UFS) Nursing School is still at the forefront of nursing education with its innovative simulation, teaching and learning skills. The school also houses the Nursing Academy for Further Education, which offers short learning programs.
Creating an effective learning environment in today’s world is no easy task and even more challenging in nursing education programs. Nursing college teachers, among others, use the following innovative teaching strategies:
Video recordings of various clinical procedures placed on the board for students. This allowed them to rethink the psychomotor skills associated with specific procedures.
Several role players (such as Life Rosepark Hospital, Free State Emergency Services, Central University of Technology, Mangaung Fire Department, Netcare 911, South African Police Services, St Johns Ambulance Services and ER24) participated in a third-person trauma course student simulation. This annual event gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of clinical and triathetic emergency care.
High confidence simulation sessions were organized for the entire group of advanced midwifery students. It was a unique two-pronged approach in which some students were subjected to obstetric emergencies using a medium-precision birth device powered by a standardized patient, and the second was a high-confidence simulation.
Pediatric basic health students had the opportunity to attend ten high-faith sessions.
Four standard patient training sessions were arranged with fourth-year students with a psychiatric nurse. The students really enjoyed it and found it very useful.
Effective learning is more than just the result of good teaching. This is enhanced by a learning environment that involves active intervention between lectures, students and peer students. Effective learning is achieved through creative strategies designed not to entertain, but to inform and stimulate.
